This morning, Friday 14 July (around 9.30 am), a stabbing took place in De Bakkerij. Three people have been injured. A volunteer (a member of the Marekerk church), the caretaker and someone who works for an organization (located in De Bakkerij). The perpetrator was also injured (on his head) and then fled. He hasn't been found yet. The police are still conducting an extensive search (you can hear and see the helicopter that has been flying above the center for hours).

Everyone is very shocked. We sympathize with the seriously injured and their relatives. Such a shocking event is a major blow to Leiden society.

That is why the General Church Council is taking the initiative to come Sunday evening (July 16, 2023) the Hooglandse Kerk from 19.00-21.00 p.m. to open up.

Everybody (whether/not religious/religious) is very welcome. The church is open to the city!

There are no speeches, there is an opportunity to light a candle, there is room to be silent, to come to reflection.

The General Church Council cordially invites you to this moment of gathering in the Hooglandse Kerk.
